Choosing the right book
To avoid discomfort or giving up on reading, it's important to find the right book. You should select readings appropriate to your level, ability, and, of course, interests. Here are some tips we think might be useful for choosing the perfect book:
- Know your interests: Do you like adventure stories, science fiction, classic literature, or non-fiction books? Choosing a book that appeals to you can be key. Although it doesn't have to be something that defines you forever, you can change themes or genres whenever you want. We also encourage you to try different ones to discover what truly fascinates you. "Check out our Adventure section" / "Check out our Science Fiction section"
- Consult reviews and recommendations: Knowing in advance what a book is about or for what type of readers it is recommended can greatly help you when choosing. In our bookstore, we write the reviews, synopses, descriptions, etc., ourselves, as we have read every book in our collection. Although you can always ask your friends or discover titles on your own.
- Start with short books: If you are new to reading, we advise you to start with short books, stories, or novellas (maximum 350 pages). This will allow you to get used to reading without feeling overwhelmed and to develop your concentration little by little.
- Don't be afraid to abandon a book: If you start reading a book and it doesn't hook you, don't hesitate to put it aside. Look for another book that appeals to you more; surely, with time, you can return to that story and even come to like it. Everyone has their moment.
Creating a cozy reading environment
The environment isn't everything, but it helps to enjoy reading more. Think of your reading space as a refuge where you can immerse yourself in the pages of a book and disconnect from the outside world, from the stress of work, home, or university. One of the most important things is to have adequate lighting. Natural light is the best option, so if you can read during the day, place your space near a window. If night falls, we recommend opting for lamps with soft, warm light.
Some people read on the train, standing while waiting, or even in the bathroom, but if you're not used to it, it's best to find something comfortable. An armchair or a sofa where you feel at ease can be the additional touch you need. And something crucial: avoid distractions! Stay away from your phone, TV, and noises that can easily distract you. If your reading area is pleasant, so will your reading be.
Do you want motivation to keep growing as a reader? Having a small bookshelf, your personal library, will help motivate you to read new books.
CASA DROJAN TIP: Accompanying your reading with a special scent or protecting your books helps create the ritual.
Setting reading goals
Let's get to the practical side: what should you do to take your first steps in reading?
Defining realistic reading goals
At first, we all feel very motivated and say, "I'm going to read 100 books this year." Then you realize that daily life makes it difficult, and you can become frustrated and even stop enjoying reading just to reach a goal. So, instead of quantity goals, set quality ones. Schedule a daily reading time that you can stick to, for example, 30 minutes or 1 chapter. These goals should be achievable and adapt to your lifestyle so you don't feel overwhelmed.
Tracking your progress
It doesn't have to be an exhaustive record or an obligation, but we think keeping a reading log can be an excellent way to stay motivated. It can be a small journal where you jot down the books you've read, your reflections, and impressions. You can turn to social media and discuss the books you're reading with your community, thus interacting with other readers and sharing opinions. Or use applications dedicated to tracking your reading progress.
If that feels like a burden, you also have the option of doing something simpler, such as organizing your shelves by books you've read and those you have pending. This way, you'll know your progress at a glance without wasting time.
Have you seen our reading notebooks? They're perfect for starting your reading journal.
Joining a book club
Joining a book club is something every reader should do at least once in their life. It's very enriching to share readings, opinions, and motivation with people who share your tastes. Goals are usually set simply but with a constant pace. This way, you won't feel alone and you'll be able to understand the works better, which will help you if you're a beginner.
You can sign up at your local library or a bookstore. At Casa Drojan, we have an active book club; you just need to go to our Patreon and follow the readings we are doing: Patreon.
Making reading a habit
To turn reading into a habit, it's essential to establish a schedule, at least initially. You can choose the time you like best, but stick to it or try to keep it consistent to establish a true routine.
It's important to minimize distractions. Turn off electronic devices and create a quiet space with the recommendations we gave you earlier. It's also highly recommended, if you're just starting to read, to do short reading sessions. As you feel more comfortable, you can gradually increase them.
Another strategy that works very well for us is to always carry a book with you. This way, you can take advantage of those free moments you have during the day, for example, waiting in line or during public transport commutes.
Remember that making reading a habit takes time; it's not something that happens with a snap of your fingers. Be patient with yourself and don't get discouraged if you miss a reading session or don't meet your planned goals. The most important thing is to enjoy the process and immerse yourself in the world of books.
When you turn reading into a habit, you will not only enrich your life with stories and knowledge but also reap the benefits of having an active and more creative mind.
