Edelvives

Bambi, A Life in the Woods (Illustrated) (Ages 9+)

Bambi, A Life in the Woods (Illustrated) (Ages 9+)

Our review

Have we told you yet that we love original children's literature and not the saccharine version? This is the proof; the authentic work of "Bambi" that recovers the original, deep, poetic and sometimes harsh tone of Felix Salten's novel.

A moving story about the cycle of life, learning, loss, and the search for independence, far removed from a purely childish tone and full of reflections on our relationship with the natural world.

And what can we say about the graphics? Benjamin Lacombe's illustrations are, as always, an absolute marvel. With that immense look of the fawn peeking out from the cover, Lacombe immerses us in a forest full of lights, shadows and a subtly melancholic touch that suits the story incredibly well.

Published with exquisite care by Edelvives, this is one of those books that amply justifies the love for the physical format (the framed cover with plant motifs seems beautiful to us). It is the perfect gift for adults who love illustration, are nostalgic for the great classics, or want to discover Lacombe's unique and beautiful universe.

An edition to read, admire, and treasure.

Synopsis

In the heart of the forest, Bambi, a small fawn, has just been born. Surrounded by his mother's love and the curiosity of the other animals, the fawn will gradually discover the immense beauty of nature, but also its most terrifying dangers.

As he grows, Bambi will learn the harsh laws of the forest, the importance of survival, the arrival of the harsh winter, and the constant threat of "He" (the human).

About the authors

Felix Salten (1869-1945) was an Austrian writer and critic. Although he wrote novels, essays, and plays, he went down in universal literary history as the creator of Bambi, a Life in the Woods (1923), an enduring classic that captivated generations.

Benjamin Lacombe (1982) is one of the most recognized French illustrators worldwide. His style, which mixes pop surrealism with a gothic, dark, and terribly beautiful touch, has brought classics like Alice in Wonderland, Macabre Tales, and Carmen to life. His books are true collector's items.
