Bartleby, the Scrivener (Illustrated)

Bartleby, the Scrivener (Illustrated)

Our Review

In this Wall Street office, Melville portrays workplace alienation and creates passive resistance through one of the most famous phrases in literary history: "I would prefer not to." It is a text both comical and deeply tragic, where the protagonist's silence screams louder than the hustle and bustle of New York.

We love this Alianza edition that includes illustrations by Stéphane Poulin. His style, with dense atmospheres and architectural perspectives, perfectly captures the story's sense of confinement and strangeness. It is a complete visual and existential experience.

Synopsis

A respectable New York lawyer decides to hire a new copyist for his office. At first, Bartleby proves to be an exemplary employee: silent, pale, and mechanically efficient. However, one day, when asked to perform a routine task, he responds with a polite yet unyielding refusal: "I would prefer not to." This phrase becomes an insurmountable wall that dismantles the logic of both the lawyer and the reader, transforming a gray office into the setting of a silent rebellion that challenges the very foundations of human will.

About the Author

Herman Melville (New York, 1819 - 1891). Although today he is considered a giant of American literature, Melville died in relative obscurity. After the initial success of his sea adventure novels, his work became more complex and metaphysical. Moby Dick is his most famous book, but it is short stories like Bartleby that demonstrate his ability to dissect the modern psyche and urban solitude with almost prophetic precision.
