Reino de cordelia

Basilisa the Beautiful and Other Russian Folk Tales (Illustrated) (Ages 10+)

Basilisa the Beautiful and Other Russian Folk Tales (Illustrated) (Ages 10+)

Our review

This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful books we have in the bookstore. Forget the fairy tales you were told as a child; this is the original version.

Here you will find Russian folk tales in their purest state: wild, dark, and full of strange and wonderful magic. And at the center of it all, the most iconic figure of Slavic folklore: the fearsome Baba Yaga and her house on chicken legs. These are fascinating stories. And it goes without saying that we love their dark touch.

But what elevates this book to the category of a gem is that it is the Reino de Cordelia edition. And what does that mean? It means it is illustrated by the Russian master Ivan Bilibin. Each page is a true work of art, a treasure that transports you to that magical Russia.

It is an essential edition for any lover of tales and special books.

Synopsis

This volume brings together a selection of the most celebrated Russian folk tales, compiled by the great folklorist Aleksandr Afanasyev.

Young Vasilisa, sent by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters into the heart of the forest, must overcome a series of impossible trials. Her goal: to obtain fire from the most terrifying and legendary witch in Slavic folklore, the fearsome Baba Yaga, who lives in a hut that stands on chicken legs.

Accompanying Vasilisa are other unforgettable myths and characters from the Russian imagination: from the immortal Koschei, who keeps his soul in an egg, to the magical Firebird or the cunning frog princess.

About the author

Aleksandr Afanasyev (1826-1871) was the great Russian folklorist, the equivalent of the Brothers Grimm in Germany. He dedicated his life to collecting and publishing almost 600 folk and fairy tales, preserving the Slavic oral tradition. His collection is the most important of its kind and the main source from which all subsequent adaptations draw.
