Chaos and Order

Chaos and Order

Our review

Some books are a refuge, and others are like a toolbox. Chaos and Order is, without a doubt, the latter. It is not a novel to devour in an afternoon, but an oracle to turn to for clarity. We have selected it because it is the quintessential expression of Escohotado's thought: free, brave, and unafraid of complexity. Every page invites you to think for yourself. It is the perfect book to always have on your nightstand and open for a spark of insight.

Chaos and Order is one of Antonio Escohotado's most important and personal works. More than a systematic essay, it is a guerrilla manual for free thought, a distillation of vital wisdom presented in the form of aphorisms and short reflections. A bedside book for navigating the complexities of the world, exploring the fundamental tension between individual freedom and the impositions of norms.

Synopsis

Chaos and Order does not follow a linear narrative or plot structure. It is composed of a series of fragments, aphorisms, and short reflections that can be read independently. It is a mosaic of ideas that revolve around the dialectical relationship between two opposing and complementary principles: Chaos and Order. Escohotado does not advocate for one over the other, but explores how life and true freedom arise from the dynamic balance between both. Throughout its pages, the author addresses an endless number of topics: justice, power, friendship, drugs, science, art. It is, in essence, a reference book for life, designed to be contemplated rather than merely read.

About the Author

Antonio Escohotado (1941-2021) was a Spanish philosopher, jurist, essayist, and professor, and one of the most influential and controversial intellectual figures of contemporary Spain. His thought, markedly libertarian and independent, always kept him away from dominant ideological currents. He is the author of monumental works that have marked generations, such as "General History of Drugs" and the trilogy "The Enemies of Commerce." "Chaos and Order" serves as a synthesis of his philosophical temperament: a rigorous, brave thinker committed solely to the pursuit of truth, however uncomfortable it might be.
