Carmilla (Hardback Pocket Edition) (Ages 14+)

Our review

Interested in learning about vampire history from its origins? Le Fanu is an essential Gothic horror author and a pioneer in creating the vampiric archetype. A work that inspired Bram Stoker for his famous Dracula.

What we like most about this version is that it is simple and affordable. It's perfect for discovering this novel for the first time, with a quite acceptable translation and a hardcover binding so you can keep it as a staple at home without it getting damaged with a second re-read.

Synopsis

Laura lives an isolated life in a castle in Styria. Her routine is broken by the arrival of Carmilla, a young woman whose beauty is only matched by her strange behavior. While a series of inexplicable deaths plagues the young women of the region, Laura experiences a mix of attraction and dread toward her new friend.

About the Author

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was the great renovator of the Gothic genre. Irish by birth, he moved horror away from conventional haunted castles and introduced it into the human psyche, turning the everyday into something unsettling and sinister.
