Carmilla (Illustrated) (Ages 14+)

Carmilla (Illustrated) (Ages 14+)

Our Review

Often overshadowed by the shadow of Stoker's Dracula, Carmilla is, in reality, the mother of the modern vampire. Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu wrote an atmospheric tale, laden with gothic sensuality and a melancholy that makes your skin crawl. This edition is also a visual marvel: Antonio Lorente manages to capture the protagonist's languid and dangerous gaze with a hyperrealism that seems to come alive under the light of a desk lamp.

It is essential reading for understanding the genre. Laura's fragility in the face of Carmilla's predatory magnetism creates a tension that Lorente enhances with deep color palettes and faces that watch you from the 19th century.

If you're looking for the essence of dark romanticism, there's no better entry point than this.
