Our review

Dedication: To no one. This is how Charles Bukowski's first novel begins, and that perfectly sums up what you're going to find. This is the story of Henry Chinaski (the author's alter ego), a man who starts working for the US postal service and discovers the hell of bureaucracy, abusive bosses, and crushing routine.

Among mailbags, monumental hangovers, women, and horse betting, Chinaski teaches us how to survive (or barely survive) in a system designed to crush the individual. Written with a direct style, without embellishments or unnecessary metaphors, it is the hilarious and pathetic chronicle of a loser who refuses to completely give up.

One of our favorites from the author!

Synopsis

Henry Chinaski is an ordinary guy with a crumbling life. He finds work at the United States postal service, thinking it will be an easy way out, but ends up trapped in a nightmarish routine of absurd regulations, tyrannical bosses, and biting dogs. Between shifts, Chinaski narrates his life of drunken binges, gambling, and fleeting sexual encounters with the brutal honesty that characterizes the "dirty old man" of American literature.

About the Author

Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) was the last cursed writer in the United States. Born in Germany and raised in Los Angeles, he worked many precarious jobs (including mailman) before dedicating himself to full-time writing in his 50s. He is the greatest exponent of "dirty realism," a style that eschews metaphor to show the unfiltered life of the American lower class.
