Chomsky & Mujica: Surviving the 21st Century

Chomsky & Mujica: Surviving the 21st Century

Our review

We like books that shake things up and make you think, and this one is a full-blown earthquake. Bringing together two of the most lucid, honest, and experienced minds of our time—Noam Chomsky and Pepe Mujica—in the same room is a historic gift. This isn't a dense essay, but rather a frank, one-on-one conversation that is deeply urgent, about the collapse we are heading towards if we don't act in time. It's a book about ecology, capitalism, and politics, but above all, it's a manifesto about hope, a call for unity. If you feel that the world is moving too fast and that we've lost our way, the words of these two "grandfathers" of global activism will serve as your compass. A must-read for any generation, regardless of political orientation. We all have something to learn from each other.

Synopsis

Two global figures of contemporary thought meet in this book to discuss transcendental issues that affect humanity and to debate alternatives for the future. On one side, Uruguayan José "Pepe" Mujica, former president and ex-guerrilla, who has achieved enormous international popularity for his message of austerity, wisdom, and common sense. On the other, American Noam Chomsky, the intellectual who revolutionized linguistics and who has spent decades analyzing the political and humanistic problems of our time. Mexican documentarian Saúl Alvídrez managed to bring them together to generate an exchange of ideas on the consequences of climate change, the crisis of capitalism, corruption, and populisms. Facing the threat of civilizational collapse, Chomsky and Mujica point to democracy, freedom, and a life with purpose as pillars from which to build a new course.

About the author

Saúl Alvídrez (1988) is a Mexican activist and documentary filmmaker. He was one of the founders of the #YoSoy132 student movement (The Mexican Spring) in 2012, which led him to seek refuge in South America, where he began the documentary project from which this book is born. His mission is to amplify public conversation among young people (millennials and centennials) to seek solutions to the unsustainable legacy they have received. This book is the written fruit of his encounter with the brilliant minds of Noam Chomsky, one of the most important intellectuals and social critics in modern history, and Pepe Mujica, a politician of enormous moral weight globally.
