Lazarillo de Tormes (ages 12+)

Lazarillo de Tormes (ages 12+)

Our review

This is an essential text of Spanish literature. We read it back in the day and every now and then it's worth rereading, as it's a small and very enjoyable book that won't take you more than one or two evenings.

It's perfect for having a good time alone or with family. If you have children and it's required reading at school, we recommend dedicating a Saturday to reading it all together. It's a way for children to fall in love with reading. Don't forget that example is fundamental.

Lazarillo de Tormes is a classic surrounded by mysteries: who was its author? why is its creation date unknown? A story of Spanish picaresque that masterfully narrates social aspects of the Renaissance era in the form of a letter.

Book details

Synopsis

The novel is narrated as a first-person letter (something new for the time). Lázaro de Tormes, the protagonist, recounts his life journey from childhood to adulthood. The most interesting part are the adventures he experiences serving all kinds of masters, each more eccentric than the last: a blind man, a stingy clergyman, a poor nobleman, a friar... Little Lázaro, poor and unhappy, gradually develops his cunning and survival instinct to become strong.

About the Author

Little, if anything, is known about the author of this book. Many names have been speculated, such as ecclesiastics, writers (Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, Lope de Rueda...) or thinkers. But these are just theories, because the reality is that it is unknown and probably never will be known.
