Salamandra

Coraline (Illustrated) (Ages 9+)

Coraline (Illustrated) (Ages 9+)

Our Review

Neil Gaiman is a master at weaving dark fairy tales, and Coraline is perhaps his most emblematic work in this field. It is a gothic horror story distilled for all ages.

Far from being a simple children's story, Coraline is a masterclass in bravery. It teaches us that being brave doesn't mean not being afraid, but rather being able to act despite being terrified.

With an oppressive atmosphere and an unforgettable villain, this short novel is intelligent, chilling, and deeply moving. An essential read that stays with you long after you close the book.

Synopsis

The day after moving house, Coraline explores the fourteen doors of her new home. Thirteen open without a problem, but the fourteenth is locked and bricked up.

When she finally manages to open it, Coraline discovers a secret passageway that leads her to another house identical to hers, but where everything seems much better. There, her "Other Mother" and "Other Father" await her. They are fun, cook her delicious meals, and give her all the attention she has always wanted.

There's just one small disturbing detail: instead of eyes, they have shiny black buttons.
