Synopsis

Writer Angela Carter, renowned worldwide for her personal retellings of fairy tales, selected and translated this anthology of stories from around the world.

Within its pages, we find everything from the classics of Perrault or the Brothers Grimm to lesser-known stories from the Arctic, Africa, or Asia. Far from being moralistic tales, these stories celebrate female wit, cunning, and resilience. They are tales of intelligent peasant women, brave heroines, wicked wolves, and powerful witches, compiled by one of the authors who best understood the wild nature of folklore.

About the author

Angela Carter (1940-1992) was a British novelist, journalist, and essayist, considered one of the most original and influential voices in 20th-century literature. She is celebrated for her gothic, feminist, and postmodern style, which she uses to deconstruct myths and fairy tales, as demonstrated in her masterpiece, The Bloody Chamber. In addition to her own fiction, she was a deep scholar of folklore, which led her to compile and translate the stories in this volume. Her work has redefined the boundaries of fantasy.
