Jekyll & Jill

From the Juniper (Illustrated and Bilingual Ed.) 🏆 Best Edited Book

From the Juniper (Illustrated and Bilingual Ed.) 🏆 Best Edited Book

Our review

The Juniper Tree is one of the darkest, bloodiest, and most fascinating tales in the German oral tradition. A story of evil stepmothers, decapitations, forbidden stews (yes, cannibalism), and a bird that sings the truth. But what makes this edition from Jekyll & Jill publishing house unique is not only the bilingual text (Spanish and Low German), but how the book is made.

It is a work of art. The illustrations by Alejandra Acosta are red and black collages that mix antique engravings, scissors, and anatomy to create an unsettling atmosphere. The book includes physical details that give you goosebumps, such as real red threads sewn into the paper and a hidden cutout inside.

It was awarded the Best Book Edited in Aragon in 2012, and as soon as you hold it in your hands, you'll understand why. It's a gift for bibliophiles who know that beauty can also hurt a little.

Synopsis

Two thousand years ago, a woman peeled an apple under a juniper tree and cut her finger. The blood fell on the snow and she wished for a child as red as blood and as white as snow. The child was born, but tragedy and envy would soon stain the roots of the juniper tree red. This edition recovers the original 1812 text by the Brothers Grimm, without softening a single comma, accompanied by an avant-garde and fierce graphic proposal.
