Above all, we recommend reading it with an open mind and ready to laugh.
It is a pioneering work and one of the most fascinating rarities in Spanish literature. Presented as a zarzuela, it is famous for being the first novel in history to feature a machine designed for time travel, predating H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine" by eight years.
In addition, this edition is a gem. It includes the zarzuela version of the story with the original manuscript, as well as a preliminary study to understand the work and its historical context. You're going to love it!

A time machine invented in Zaragoza, years before H.G. Wells became famous for his. Forget minimalist designs: the Anacronópete is a colossal iron box that runs on electricity and, thanks to a mysterious "García fluid," makes its passengers rejuvenate, thus traveling back in time. But this is not a conventional science fiction novel. It's a zarzuela: a comic, satirical, and musical journey that starts from the Paris Universal Exposition to visit the Battle of Tetuan, the Granada of the Catholic Monarchs, and 3rd century China. A cantankerous scientist, his love-struck niece, and a group of mischievous French showgirls travel aboard.
About the Author
Enrique Gaspar y Rimbau (1842-1902) was a Spanish diplomat and writer. His career as a consul led him to live in France and China, which provided him with a cosmopolitan perspective for his works. Although today he is mainly remembered for "El anacronópete," in his time he was a successful playwright, with more than a hundred works, from historical drama to zarzuela. His mastery of stage language and agile dialogue is evident in this work, where he fused his interest in science and the future with the most popular format of his time.
