The Cavalier in the Yellow Doublet (The Adventures of Captain Alatriste 5) (Ages 14+)

Our review

If there's one setting where Captain Alatriste moves like a fish in water, it's Habsburg Madrid: a labyrinth of dark alleyways, taverns, and conspiracies. In this fifth installment, Pérez-Reverte gives us the quintessence of the swashbuckling genre. We chose it because it's a fast-paced novel, a perfect thriller where every corner hides an ambush. There are no grand battles here, just the solitude of a man whose loyalty has put him in the crosshairs of the most powerful. It's Alatriste at his purest.

"The Man in the Yellow Doublet," published in 2003, is the fifth adventure of Captain Alatriste, a thrilling swashbuckling thriller that brings the action back to the heart of Madrid.

Arturo Pérez-Reverte weaves a tale of palace intrigue, bedroom secrets, and political conspiracies where his protagonist becomes the man who knew too much, and his head, the most coveted prize on the board.

Synopsis

Back in Madrid in 1626, Captain Alatriste accepts a seemingly simple assignment: to escort a masked man to a nocturnal rendezvous with a famous actress, María de Castro. During the encounter, the couple is assaulted by two men; one of them, known as "the man in the yellow doublet," tries to kill Alatriste's client. True to his profession, the captain draws his steel and kills the assailant. The problem arises when he discovers the identity of his protected client.
