Man's Search for Meaning (Expanded Edition)

Man's Search for Meaning (Expanded Edition)

Our review

We believe that "Man's Search for Meaning" is not only a testament to the horror of the Holocaust, but a powerful tool for facing adversity in any era. For it is a positive and comforting text, contrary to what one might expect.

Viktor Frankl tells us, from his perspective as a psychiatrist, about his experience as a Jewish prisoner in Nazi concentration camps and how this affected the other people who lived through this tragedy with him.

We especially recommend this expanded hardcover edition from Herder for two reasons: its durability (it is a vital reference book) and the inclusion of the play "Synchronization in Birkenwald". This unpublished play adds an extra philosophical layer, where Frankl tests his theories in a moving dialogue.

If you are looking to understand how hope can survive in the darkest absolute, this is your book.

Synopsis

The psychiatrist Viktor E. Frankl narrates his experience in Nazi concentration camps not from resentment, but from an analysis of the human psyche. Amidst extreme suffering, Frankl discovered that the last freedom no one can take away from us is the attitude with which we face circumstances. This special edition not only compiles the lessons of logotherapy on the human capacity to transcend difficulties by discovering meaning, but is enriched with "Synchronization in Birkenwald", a dramatic work where the author personifies his philosophical and therapeutic concepts in an allegory about suffering humanity.

About the author

Viktor E. Frankl (1905-1997) was a professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of Vienna and a survivor of several concentration camps, including Auschwitz and Dachau. Founder of Logotherapy (the "Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy"), he dedicated his life to helping others find meaning in existence, even in the most desperate situations. His work has been translated into dozens of languages and remains more relevant today than ever.
