Julio Verne's Reader (Episodes of an Interminable War 2)

Julio Verne's Reader (Episodes of an Interminable War 2)

Our review

What we like most about the "Episodes of an Interminable War" collection is that its novels can be read independently and are very different from each other. Almudena Grandes tells us about life in Francoist Spain, but always from a very original perspective. In this case, we loved that the protagonist is a child and that he turns to adventure novels. It is a book that is painful, but at the same time invites you to have fun and dream.

With "The Reader of Jules Verne," Almudena Grandes transports us to the Sierra Sur of Jaén in the harsh 1940s. A small town and its mountains will be the key setting for this story about the loss of innocence, adventure, loyalty, and the discovery of truth, where the son of a civil guard will learn to decipher the adult world thanks to literature.

It is the second novel in her acclaimed series, which portrays the rural post-war period with the narrative mastery of her great reference, Benito Pérez Galdós.

Synopsis

The story is set in 1947 in Fuensanta de Martos (Jaén). Nino, a nine-year-old boy, the son of a civil guard, lives a solitary and observant life. His life changes when he meets Pepe el Portugués, a cultured and mysterious stranger who opens the doors of reading to him through adventure novels by authors like Jules Verne and Robert Louis Stevenson.

About the Author

Almudena Grandes (Madrid, 1960-2021) studied Geography and History. At 29, she published her first novel, Las edades de Lulú, which achieved great success and allowed her to dedicate herself completely to writing. Her most outstanding legacy is the novel cycle Episodios de una guerra interminable, a series of six volumes that narrate stories set in post-war Spain, conceived as a tribute to Benito Pérez Galdós's Episodios Nacionales.
