Synopsis

Although many scholars have denied the existence of a gothic genre in our country, overshadowed by realism and costumbrismo, other critics vindicate a "Spanish-style" gothic fiction that would have influenced authors like Espronceda and, of course, Bécquer.

This edition brings together the twenty fantastic and terrifying stories belonging to his famous "Legends," from the most popular such as "The Mount of Souls" and "Maese Pérez the Organist" to other gems that explore mystery, the supernatural, and the darkness of the human soul, consolidating the author as an undisputed master of dark Romanticism.

About the author

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (Seville, 1836 - Madrid, 1870), son of a painter, was orphaned as a child. A journalist, short story writer, and, above all, a romantic poet, he published much of his work in the newspaper El Contemporáneo. His life was always plagued by economic hardship, and his unrequited love for Julia Espín inspired many of his immortal "Rhymes." Suffering from tuberculosis, he died in Madrid at the age of 34, leaving behind a legacy whose influence is unparalleled in the history of Spanish literature.
