The King's Gold (The Adventures of Captain Alatriste 4) (Ages 14+)

The King's Gold (The Adventures of Captain Alatriste 4) (Ages 14+)

Our Review

After the mud and blood of Flanders, Captain Alatriste lands in the richest and most corrupt place on the planet: Seville in the Spanish Golden Age. This, for us, is the most picaresque novel in the saga, an adventure with the flavor of the classics. We chose it because Pérez-Reverte not only narrates an assault, but also paints a brutal and fascinating fresco of the city where the gold from the Indies bought and corrupted everything. It is a story of ruffians, treasures, and loyalties measured in doubloons. Pure adventure.

"The King's Gold," published in 2000, is Captain Alatriste's fourth adventure. After the cold of Flanders, Arturo Pérez-Reverte moves the action to Seville in 1626, the capital of the world, the gateway and drain of the Indies.

It is a thrilling novel that delves into the world of galleons, treasures, rogues, and smuggling, where honor is measured in doubloons and life is worth less than gold.

Synopsis

Returning from the war in Flanders, Diego Alatriste and an Iñigo Balboa, already hardened by battle, travel to Seville in 1626. There, the captain is hired for a mission as lucrative as it is risky: to intercept and steal the gold that a group of powerful smugglers are illegally bringing in the fleet of Indies galleons, to prevent it from being declared and taxed by the king.
