The Bridge of Assassins (The Adventures of Captain Alatriste 7) (Ages 14+)

Our Review

Just when you think you know Captain Alatriste, Pérez-Reverte pulls him out of the trenches of Flanders and drops him into the most dangerous place of all: a masquerade ball in Venice. This, for us, is one of the most special books in the series. It's a pure spy novel, where daggers are hidden and betrayals are whispered in the canals. We chose it because it shows our favorite character in a completely new light, proving that his cunning is as sharp as his steel. A delight of intrigue and atmosphere.

"The Bridge of Assassins," published in 2011, is the seventh installment in the adventures of Captain Alatriste. On this occasion, Arturo Pérez-Reverte transforms his iconic character into a spy and immerses him in the most beautiful and treacherous city in the world: 17th-century Venice.

It is a novel of intrigue and conspiracy, set in the labyrinth of canals, masks, and secrets of the Venetian Carnival.

Synopsis

The story takes place in the winter of 1627. Captain Alatriste and his page Íñigo Balboa are summoned for a secret mission in the service of the Spanish Crown. They must travel to Venice, where the Doge (the Republic's supreme leader) is about to sign a secret alliance with France, which would be a severe blow to Spanish interests in Italy. The order is clear and brutal: infiltrate the city during the chaos of Carnival and assassinate the Doge on the famous Bridge of Sighs.
