The vampire

The vampire

Our review

This story has a curious personal history. Its protagonists, who could be Polidori himself and his friend Lord Byron, become the archetypes of vampire stories. Although authors like Bram Stoker or Le Fanu would improve vampire literature, this is undoubtedly a story you must know to learn more about the origin of vampires.

If you like this topic and want to know its roots, you cannot miss this short tale. It may not be the best undead story you'll read, but it is the one that establishes the archetype from which Bram Stoker drew to create the famous Dracula.

Sometimes, the most influential ideas come from where you least expect them.

Synopsis

Lord Ruthven is a mysterious aristocrat who captivates women. Aubrey, a young Londoner, is curious and decides to travel with this peculiar man to learn more about him. However, what he will discover is not exactly what he expected.

About the Author

John William Polidori (London, 1795-1821) was Lord Byron's personal physician. During a stormy night in Switzerland, with Byron and the Shelleys, one of the most famous literary evenings in history took shape. From there emerged two fundamental works: Frankenstein and The Vampyre, the latter written by Polidori himself. Plagued by gambling debts, he committed suicide at 25, without ever seeing the impact his small tale would have on universal literature.
