The Summer My Mother Had Green Eyes

The Summer My Mother Had Green Eyes

Our review

“The Summer When My Mother Had Green Eyes” begins with rage, with a son who hates his mother, and ends with one of the most devastating declarations of love we have ever read. Tatiana Țîbuleac goes for the reader's throat; her prose is a strange blend of poetry and frankness: she is capable of describing the most absolute ugliness and, in the next paragraph, making you cry with the beauty of a sunflower field.

It's the story of a last summer. If you're looking for a light read, run. But if you want a novel that will brand itself onto your retina like a sunburn, take it. It is a masterpiece about learning to love.

🏆 More than five awards since its publication, including the Cálamo Book of the Year 2019 Award (Spain) and the Librerías 2020 Award (CEGAL).

Synopsis

Aleksy is an artist in crisis, resentful and blocked, who remembers the last summer he spent with his mother in a French village. What promised to be a torture for both becomes a period of light. Amidst cornfields and slow afternoons, mother and son lay down their arms. The author weaves a silent and powerful reconciliation, where illness and death act as the photographic developer that finally allows the true colors of life to be seen.

About the author

Tatiana Țîbuleac (Chișinău, Moldova, 1978). A journalist by training, her style is direct, visual, and raw. With this, her first novel, she shook the European literary scene (Moldovan Writers' Union Award, Cálamo Award in Spain). She has shown that it is possible to write about pain without resorting to melodrama, using language that cuts like broken glass.
