Blindness Essay

Blindness Essay

Our review

Can you imagine suddenly going blind?

José Saramago plunges us into a terrifying epidemic: a white blindness that spreads uncontrollably. But what starts as a health crisis quickly turns into a descent into hell.

With his unmistakable style —that dense prose, with hardly any paragraph breaks, that drags you along like a river— Saramago forces us to look. He lifts the veil of civilization and confronts us with the most uncomfortable question: what is left of us when the rules disappear?

It is a brutal novel that makes you think. It's one of those reads that leaves you trembling, that changes the way you see the world and reminds you of "the responsibility of having eyes when others have lost them." An absolute masterpiece of science fiction.

Synopsis

A man stopped at a red light suddenly goes blind. It is the first case of a strange "white blindness" that spreads rapidly. Quarantined or lost in the city, the blind will have to confront the most primitive of human nature: the will to survive at all costs.

In this terrifying allegory, José Saramago draws a moving picture of the times we live in. In such a world, can there be any hope? The reader will experience a unique imaginative experience. At a point where literature and wisdom intersect, the author forces us to stop, close our eyes, and see.

About the author

José Saramago (1922-2010) was a Portuguese novelist, poet, journalist, and playwright. Born into a peasant family, he was unable to finish his studies due to lack of resources, but his self-taught drive made him one of the most important writers of the 20th century. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1998, the Swedish Academy highlighted his ability to "make an elusive reality comprehensible, with parables sustained by imagination, compassion, and irony." His unique style and profound social and political commitment make him a lucid conscience of our time.
