The road

The road

Our review

Survival and depression. these would be the right words to identify this novel.

The first thing you ask yourself as soon as you start is what on earth happened on Earth for there to be no trace of life left. The eruption of a supervolcano? The fall of a meteor? The consequences of a nuclear war?

Always mysterious and sometimes depressing, it is a story written with great detail. Narrated in the form of a diary or the thoughts of the father who tries to protect his son from the squalor of the life they have been forced to live.

It is certainly one of the best post-apocalyptic stories you can read. If you tend to sadness, our recommendation is to take your time with the reading. Sometimes it can be quite hard.

Synopsis

The world has been devastated by an unknown cataclysm. A father and his son walk south, towards the coast, through a dead landscape covered in ash. They push a shopping cart with their few belongings, trying to survive the cold, hunger, and the cannibal gangs lurking in the darkness.

In the midst of absolute desolation, their only mission is to protect each other and "carry the fire": the last spark of humanity and hope in a world that has lost both.

About the author

Cormac McCarthy (Providence, 1933 - Santa Fe, 2023) is one of the most important and enigmatic figures in contemporary American literature. Known for his austere, poetic, and often brutal prose, McCarthy explored the darkest corners of human nature. He was a very reserved author who rarely gave interviews. His work, which includes classics such as Blood Meridian and No Country for Old Men, earned him numerous awards, including the Pulitzer for The Road in 2007.
