The house

The house

Our Review

Paco Roca has a gift: he makes the everyday transcendent. In The House, there are no superheroes or epic battles. There are just three siblings who return to their family's second home to fix it up and sell it after their father's death.

But as they clear out old junk and repair the pergola, the ghost of their father (and their own childhood) begins to appear in every corner. It's a story about the passage of time and how objects hold pieces of our soul.

The book's format is landscape (horizontal), which makes for a leisurely read, as if you were looking at a photo album or a classic film. It's impossible to read it without remembering your parents, your hometown, or those summers that will never return. It's sad, yes, but with that luminous sadness that makes you want to call your family as soon as you close it.

An absolute masterpiece of Spanish comics for adults.

🏆 Eisner Award (2020), among other recognitions.

Synopsis

Over the years, the owner filled his vacation home with memories, a silent witness to family life. After his death, his three children return to prepare it for sale. As they clean, repair leaks, and discard old junk, doubts arise: what to do with the memories? What to do with the past? Among trash and treasures, old grudges will surface, but also a portrait of a father they perhaps didn't know as well as they thought.
