Bernarda Alba's House (ages 14+)

Bernarda Alba's House (ages 14+)

Our review

Inside the house, because you'll barely leave it, you can breathe in 20th-century Spain. A wonderful play to experience, even if it's through the characters' eyes, how these women were governed by lust, money, death, and appearances.

The House of Bernarda Alba is a classic play by the magnificent Lorca, an unparalleled representation of early 20th-century Spanish society. It has a poetic and profound style, a scan of the deepest Spain, of religious fanaticism and the fear of having one's intimacy discovered.

In short, a wonderful play from the pen of Federico García Lorca. A must-read of Spanish literature.

Synopsis

After the death of her second husband, Bernarda Alba imposes eight years of strict mourning on her five daughters—Angustias, Magdalena, Amelia, Martirio, and Adela. Tension grows when Angustias, daughter of the first husband and sole heiress of a large fortune, is courted by the most eligible bachelor in town. This unleashes hatred, envy, and resentment in a house where repression and secrets boil beneath the surface.
