The woman in white

The woman in white

Our Review

It's impossible to talk about mystery novels without mentioning this one. At Casa Drojan, we have a soft spot for Victorian "foundations", and this is the king of them all. Why do we love this Alba edition so much? Because it respects the magnitude of the work.

"The Woman in White" is not just a thriller about stolen identities and inheritances; it's the stage where Marian Halcombe, one of the great heroines of universal literature, shines. Ugly (by the standards of the time), intelligent, and brave, she is the one who truly captivates you. Reading this book is immersing yourself in an atmosphere of fog, asylums, and family secrets that you devour with anticipation.

A must-read for rainy afternoons, with a hardcover edition that is a luxury for any library, and with a great translation by Miguel Temprano.

Synopsis

London, a dark night. On a lonely road, a mysterious woman dressed entirely in white appears, desperately asking for help. Thus begins a labyrinthine plot narrated through testimonies, diaries, and letters. The story follows drawing teacher Walter Hartright and stepsisters Laura Fairlie and Marian Halcombe, who will become entangled in the machinations of the sinister Sir Percival Glyde and the unforgettable (and formidable) Count Fosco. A story of conspiracies, madness, and poetic justice.

About the author

Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was the great master of the Victorian novel and a close friend of Charles Dickens. He was a pioneer in creating complex, suspenseful plots that kept 19th-century readers on the edge of their seats, practically inventing the rules of modern mystery.
