Minotauro

A Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange

Book details

Synopsis

Fifteen-year-old Alex enjoys bouts of ultraviolence. Together with his gang of friends, he robs, kills, and rapes in a nightmarish future, until the State puts an end to their excesses and subjects him to the Ludovico Technique, an experimental treatment that conditions him to be "good."

A Clockwork Orange is a dystopian horror, a black comedy, and an exploration of free will. But it is also a work of exuberant invention where a new language was created for its characters: the teenage slang "nadsat."

About the author

Anthony Burgess (Manchester, 1917-1993) was a novelist, critic, composer, and a genius of language. His background as a linguist was key to creating "nadsat." Although Stanley Kubrick's famous film immortalized his work, Burgess always disagreed with it, mainly because it was based on the American edition, which omitted the crucial final chapter he wrote and which changes the meaning of the entire novel.
