The Fifth Victim (The Fourth Monkey Trilogy #2)

The Fifth Victim (The Fourth Monkey Trilogy #2)

Our review

Often, sequels suffer from a decline in quality, but J.D. Barker breaks that rule with a follow-up that is, if anything, even more thrilling than its predecessor. In The Fifth Victim, the author doesn't just repeat the formula; he expands Porter's universe and immerses us in an even colder and more disturbing atmosphere.

What we like about this installment is how Barker intertwines a new case—that of young women found dead in frozen lakes—with the long shadow of the Fourth Monkey Killer, who continues to play cat and mouse from the past. The tension lies not only in the police investigation but also in the personal collapse of the protagonists.

⚠️IMPORTANT: It is essential to have read the first book before diving into this one. Barker takes many details from the previous plot for granted, and if you jump straight in, you'll miss half the magic.

Synopsis

J. D. Barker has established himself with this trilogy as the direct heir to Thomas Harris. His ability to manage multiple timelines and points of view without losing pace has led critics to compare him to the great masters of American commercial suspense. A Florida resident, he continues to challenge genre conventions.
