The loser's path

The loser's path

Our review

We don't know if we can be objective enough with this author, because we must admit that we love him. It's true that he's not for everyone, he has a sordid and direct language and doesn't care about saying things as they are. But what is clear is that he was a master at telling stories. He draws you in and doesn't let you put the book down until you've finished it.

Ham on Rye is an autobiographical novel, or at least it seems to be. It tells the first-person life story of young Henry Chinaski, Bukowski's supposed alter ego. It's a story of survival in a small American neighborhood, pursued by poverty and abuse.

If you like dirty realism, slice-of-life stories and direct narratives, you're going to love this book.

Synopsis

This is the story of young Henry Chinaski, from his earliest childhood to his full maturity. A harsh reality of poverty, vices, and abuse. The author immerses us in the life of a child without resources who has to survive both at home and at school. A story like life itself, told without euphemisms.

About the Author

Charles Bukowski (Germany, 1920 - USA, 1994) grew up in the United States. His story is a transparent mystery, as part of his childhood of poverty and abuse is portrayed in his novels, but it is difficult to differentiate which points are fictional. He led a complicated life, full of alcohol and marginality, something that is reflected in the sordid reality of his stories. It wasn't until the end of his life that he began to glimpse success.
