The Lives of Constantine-Cyril and Methodius of Thessaloniki. Eastern and Western Traditions (CSIC)

Our Review

This book is a real event for those passionate about medieval history, philology, and the origins of Europe. We are used to hearing about Cyril and Methodius as the "apostles of the Slavs," but rarely do we have the opportunity to go to the original sources.

What Álvarez-Pedrosa and Santos Marinas do here is a monumental work: for the first time in Spain, they gather, translate, and compare the original biographies (hagiographies) of these two saints. It is fascinating to see how the story of the same men was told differently in the Eastern tradition (in Old Slavonic and Greek) and in the Western tradition (in Latin).

It is not just a biography; it is a book about how history is constructed. It is a work of impressive erudition, edited with the rigor of the CSIC, which allows us to read the foundational texts that shaped the Slavic identity. A gem for scholars and high-level curious readers.

Synopsis

This monograph presents, for the first time in Spain, the original sources, along with their respective translations into Spanish, of the main works for the study of the missionary activity and the lives of Saints Cyril and Methodius, as well as their disciple Saint Clement of Ohrid, within both the Western and Eastern traditions.

These sources range from the Old Slavonic Lives of Constantine-Cyril and Methodius, through the Extended Life of Clement of Ohrid written in Greek, to Latin testimonies such as the Vita Cyrilli cum Translatione sancti Clementis and various papal letters from the period.
