Book of Disquiet

Book of Disquiet

Our review

Let us be clear: it has no beginning or end. There is no adventure plot. It is the intimate diary of someone who looks at the world from an office window in Lisbon and sees things that the rest of us ignore. You can read it in any order you wish.

This Alianza edition is special because the translation by Manuel Moya (poet and narrator) greatly respects the musicality of the original Portuguese. It is the perfect recommendation for sensitive, introspective, or melancholic readers.

💡DROJAN TIP: keep it on your nightstand, open it at random, and read just a fragment. It's almost magical how it always seems to tell you exactly what you need to hear at that moment.

Synopsis

Bernardo Soares, an assistant bookkeeper in the city of Lisbon and a semi-heteronym of the author, invites us to wander through his intimate geography. In this collection of fragments, aphorisms, and musings, Pessoa constructs an "autobiography without events."

Through hypnotic prose, the author explores tedium, dreams, the futility of action, and the beauty of everyday life. It is a portrait of the modern human soul, trapped between grey reality and the immensity of imagination. Considered the pinnacle of Portuguese prose, it is a heartbreaking and beautiful testimony to the simple fact of being alive.

About the author

Fernando Pessoa (Lisbon, 1888-1935) is, along with Camões, the most important poet in the Portuguese language. He is famous for his "drama in people": he created multiple fictional authors (heteronyms) such as Álvaro de Campos, Ricardo Reis, or Alberto Caeiro. The Book of Disquiet was signed by Bernardo Soares, whom Pessoa considered a mutilation of his own personality.
