Purity of Blood (The Adventures of Captain Alatriste 2) (ages 14+)

Our Review

If in the first novel we met the swordsman, in Limpieza de sangre we discover the man who dares to defy the most fearsome power of his time: the Inquisition. This second part is, for us, one of the most suffocating of the saga. We have chosen it because here the adventure becomes darker and the tension almost unbearable. It is no longer just about duels in alleyways, but about a silent struggle against fanaticism. It is a book that grips you with an impeccable plot and teaches you the true meaning of fear in the Spanish Golden Age.

"Limpieza de sangre", published in 1997, is the second adventure of Captain Alatriste, in which Arturo Pérez-Reverte immerses his protagonist in the most terrifying shadows of Golden Age Spain.

Leaving behind palace conspiracies, this time the danger has a name: the Holy Inquisition. It is a thrilling novel that explores religious fanaticism, corruption, and terror in a society obsessed with purity of faith. If the first novel introduced you to the character, this one fully immerses you in the fear and darkness of his time.

The opportunity arises when a nobleman hires the captain for a suicidal mission: to rescue Elvira, a young novice who has entered the convent of the Adoratrices Benitas.
