Space Merchants

Our Review

Long before Blade Runner or Cyberpunk, Frederik Pohl and C.M. Kornbluth wrote the playbook. The Space Merchants is the ultimate advertising dystopia, a satire so brilliant and brazen it's frightening how accurate it was in 1952.

In this future, the world is not ruled by politicians or dictators, but by two large rival advertising agencies. The planet's resources are depleted, water is a luxury, and citizens are addicted consumers.

We follow Mitch Courtenay, a star copywriter, an Alpha-class copy director. He's a shark in a world of sharks. But when he's assigned the biggest campaign in history (selling the colonization of Venus to the masses), everything goes wrong.

Its prose is agile, funny, and ruthless. It's a fundamental, hilarious, and terrifying science fiction novel that will make you look at the ads on your phone with different eyes.

Synopsis

In an overpopulated world dominated by advertising, star copywriter Mitchell Courtenay lives at the top of the pyramid. As "copydirector" of the Fowler Schocken agency, his job is to create the desire to consume.

His most ambitious project: the colonization of Venus. The only problem is that the planet is an uninhabitable hell. His job is to make it look like paradise, but the competing agency, Taunton, won't make it easy for him.

Suddenly, Mitch is kidnapped, stripped of his identity, and cast to the bottom of society. Now he is an anonymous consumer who must fight to survive in the brutal world he himself helped create, while trying to unmask a conspiracy and flee from the dreaded "consers," terrorists fighting against consumerism.

About the author

Frederik Pohl (1919-2013) and Cyril M. Kornbluth (1923-1958) were a legendary duo of the Golden Age of science fiction. Pohl was a central figure in the genre as a writer, editor, and agent, awarded multiple Hugo and Nebula prizes. Kornbluth was a prodigious talent and a scathing social critic, whose career was tragically short. Together they wrote several satirical novels that became classics, with The Space Merchants being their most celebrated and acclaimed work.
