Portrait of My Double

Portrait of My Double

Our review

A short book that you can read in one sitting. An original story that leads to an expected but still enjoyable ending. It is a book that is best enjoyed for its style and the author's skillful use of such an unreliable narrator as the story itself.

In Retratos de mi doble, this narrator is a poker-playing journalist who tries to con a guy with his gambling buddy's infallible system. It's a short but exciting story, recommended if you like originality, double-crossing, and a very personal narrative style.

A short novel that you'll want to reread from time to time to get more out of it.

About the Author

Georgi Markov (Bulgaria, 1929 - London, 1978) was a renowned novelist and playwright in his country. In 1969, he defected for being a dissident voice against the communist government and moved to London, where he worked as a journalist for the BBC. His activism put him on a blacklist. After several attempts, he was assassinated in 1978 by being pricked with an umbrella containing ricin, in a case believed to have been orchestrated by the KGB. His work was banned in Bulgaria until the fall of communism in 1989.
