Our review

"Sarajevo Blues" is not just any novel or book. We found it to be a fundamental text of European memory and a testament to resistance and human dignity. Moreover, it is exquisitely published, which helps transport us to the streets of the besieged city. This book, which was a success upon its first publication in the late nineties, brings us closer to the most intimate details of daily life under bombs.

Its author, Semezdin Mehmedinović, achieves the feat of finding beauty and humanity amidst devastation, intertwining brief prose and poems with a heartbreaking clarity that has fascinated authors such as Paul Auster.

The striking cover photograph, accompanied by the quote "Snow will cover the city, just as war has covered time," already alerts you to the intimate and melancholic tone you will find within. It is a raw read, yes, but a very necessary and strangely beautiful one.

A perfect recommendation for those looking for books with soul, the kind that don't leave you indifferent and bring you closer to the social and human reality of the world.

Synopsis

Considered his most iconic work, this book intertwines brief prose and poems written during the siege of Sarajevo (1992-1996). In them, Mehmedinović records daily life during the conflict with an intimate and restrained gaze.

From the death of family members to the loss of children's innocence, the author reveals the atrocious condition of those caught in war. This text, raw and delicate at the same time, transforms scenes of destruction and the most minimal gestures into a true blues, a melancholic and tenacious song of survival. The work, a milestone of resistance, is accompanied by the powerful photographs of Milomir Kovačević.
