On reading and books

On reading and books

Our review

This book constantly reminds us why we work at Librería Casa Drojan. Reading is important, but so is reflecting and thinking about what you read. Despite being a short text, it offers a lot.

The Art of Reading is one of the most famous essays by the philosopher Schopenhauer. It's a reminder that reading is crucial, though, beware, it must be quality reading. If you don't know this direct and critical author yet, we recommend you read him. We don't know if he will convince you, but he will surely make you think.

A must-read for all those who aspire to absorb knowledge. It includes a very elaborate and professional introduction by Professor Pedro Aullón de Haro.

Synopsis

Schopenhauer was a great critic of reading without reflection. For him, not everything was about reading. This work is a very brief text, but it is worth having and revisiting it from time to time so as not to fall into the trap of reading without thinking.

About the Author

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was born in what is now Poland. His father was a successful businessman and his mother, a great writer. After his father's death, he enrolled at the University to study medicine, but a professor sparked his appetite for philosophy, his true vocation. The work Parerga and Paralipomena was what gave him a name in the history of thought.
