Book Details

Synopsis

Deep in the mountains, in Mas Clavell, lives a lineage of women marked by an ancient curse... or perhaps by a pact. I gave you eyes and you looked into the darkness is the story of these women, from their ancestor Joana, accused of witchcraft, to the subsequent generations who inhabit a house full of secrets, apparitions, and a deep connection to the land.

Through the voices of the living and the dead, of the forest spirits, of animals and objects, Irene Solà weaves a genealogy of resistance, solitude, and ancestral knowledge. It is a novel about the stories we tell ourselves to explain the world and about how violence and beauty are inherited from mothers to daughters.

About the author

Irene Solà (Mequinenza, 1990) is a Catalan writer and artist. She holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona and a master's in Literature, Film, and Visual Culture from the University of Sussex. She made a strong entrance into the literary scene with The Dikes, but it was her novel I Sing and the Mountain Dances that cemented her as a literary phenomenon, winning the Anagrama Prize for Catalan Novel, the European Union Prize for Literature, and unanimous acclaim from critics and readers. Her work is characterized by poetic prose and an animistic worldview.
