Valdemar

Tenebrarium

Tenebrarium

Our review

For us, Pilar Pedraza is the grand dame of gothic and the strange in Spain. Reading her is always a privilege, and this book is proof. Tenebrarium is not an anthology of short stories, but something perhaps more valuable: the author herself dissecting terror.

This book brings together her reflections and essays on the fantastic. It is a journey through the figures that make up the history of misogyny in Western culture, exploring the fears and desires that patriarchy projects onto women through the sinister. Pedraza reflects on corpses, monstrosities, madmen, incubi, vampiras, and dolls, revisiting her favorite themes.

It is a fragmented book, like our own era, that invites us to understand why what scares us, scares us. A Valdemar gem essential for understanding the secret history of fear.

Synopsis

Tenebrarium is not merely a collection of texts, but a journey through the projections of the fantastic and new terrors. Pilar Pedraza's essayistic work forms a kind of history of misogyny, using figures of the fantastic feminine to reflect on the fears and desires that patriarchal culture projects onto women.

The volume is divided into four parts:

  • Corpses and Skeletons: An exhibition on the fascination with death and the dead body.

  • Monstrosities, Madmen, and Incubi: A reminder that "real monsters of flesh and blood exist," anomalous beings turned into a spectacle.

  • The Sinister Feminine: A reflection on old women, vampires, or companion dolls.

  • Fantastic Drifts: Where new terrors are reached starting from ancient myths.
