All dark, no stars

All dark, no stars

Our Review

Stephen King is the master of supernatural monsters, but in this collection, we are the monsters. Full Dark, No Stars is, for us, one of his darkest, most mature, and most pessimistic works (though he claims it's optimistic). These are four novellas, four irreversible descents into the abyss of human nature, where there is no escape or redemption.

King turns off the light and leaves us alone with murder, revenge, greed, and the unspeakable secrets hidden in seemingly perfect marriages. Here, darkness is not a cosmic entity, but the conscious decision to do evil.

This work brings together four novellas connected by the theme of retribution and inner darkness:

  • "Big Driver": A mystery novelist is brutally assaulted on a shortcut and plans a methodical revenge.

  • "Fair Extension": A man dying of cancer makes a devilish pact to extend his life, passing his misfortune to his best friend.

  • "A Good Marriage": A wife discovers, after twenty years of happy marriage, that her husband is a ruthless serial killer.
