Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass (Illustrated and Annotated) (Ages 10+)

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass (Illustrated and Annotated) (Ages 10+)

Our Review

Just when you think you've seen everything related to Alice, Valdemar comes along and publishes this. It's not a book, it's a museum. It is, without a doubt, one of the best editions of Lewis Carroll's masterpiece.

What makes this book an absolute treasure is that, for the first time, it brings together the three canonical visions of the story in a single volume:

  1. The iconic drawings by John Tenniel, which are the mental image we all have of Alice.

  2. The marvelous, magical, and ethereal color illustrations by Arthur Rackham, the great master of the Golden Age.

  3. And, to complete the circle, the original drawings by Lewis Carroll himself, those strange and fascinating sketches he made for the first manuscript.

It's a complete journey: we see the character born from the author's pen, become a legend with Tenniel, and transform into a magical dream with Rackham. All of this, of course, bound in hardcover as only Valdemar knows how, and with the rigor of the new translation, prologue, and notes by Mauro Armiño. A true gem.

Synopsis

This edition brings together Lewis Carroll's two novels: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.

The journey begins one golden afternoon, when young Alice follows a White Rabbit muttering "I'm late!" and falls down his rabbit hole. She lands in an underground world where logic has been abolished, a place populated by unforgettable characters such as the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat, and the fearsome Queen of Hearts.

In the second part, Alice steps through a looking-glass to discover a world that functions like a giant chess game, where she must crown herself queen while encountering Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Humpty Dumpty, and the Jabberwocky.

About the Author

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) was the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an Anglican deacon, logician, mathematician, and British photographer. His work Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, born from an improvised story for young Alice Liddell, revolutionized children's literature by replacing morality with nonsense and logical play. His two Alice novels are pinnacles of universal literature.
