Maravillas neighborhood

Maravillas neighborhood

Our review

It's not an easy book to read, more due to the author's poetic and reflective style than the story itself. It doesn't have a defined plot; it's more like a chronicle of social life in a Madrid neighborhood. But if you can overcome this initial barrier and delve into its words, you'll be imbued with the wonder of its literature. It immerses you as if on a journey through time and makes you feel the pulse of life.

You probably haven't heard much about Rosa Chacel, yet she is one of the writers of the Generation of '27. Due to her exile, she was little known in our country, despite "Barrio de Maravillas" winning the Critics' Prize in 1976 and being supported by authors like Ortega y Gasset.

It's a novel that blends local customs with a poetic and philosophical style. A book that demands tranquility. It's not for the average reader. It requires conscious effort, but the reward is immense.

Synopsis

Elena and Isabel, thirteen and eleven years old, observe everything that happens in the building where they live, in a Madrid neighborhood at the beginning of the 20th century, from a curious and reflective perspective. Sewing, traditions, art, and even politics come together in a book about life and the dilemmas of an era.

About the Author

Rosa Chacel (Valladolid, 1898 - Madrid, 1993) was one of the great writers of the Generation of '27. Great-niece of the poet Zorrilla, she grew up in a liberal and cultured environment. She studied Fine Arts and rubbed shoulders with the great authors of the time. After the Spanish Civil War, she went into exile in Buenos Aires, which is why her work was barely known in Spain for decades. Her first major recognition in her native country came in 1976 when she received the Critics' Prize for "Barrio de Maravillas."
