Our review

Reading On Anger has been wonderful. We have all, at some point, felt moments of anger or vengeance, and while it may seem like a logical reaction to harm received, Seneca reminds us that it is not the appropriate behavior for a species that reasons. As history tells us, revenge never leads to anything good.

This philosophical work is a treatise in which the author analyzes the origin, effects, and ways to control anger from a Stoic perspective, considering it a destructive and irrational passion. The tone is practical and ethical, and through historical examples and concrete advice, Seneca proposes methods to prevent or moderate it. On Anger is not only a reflection on emotional control, but a guide to living with wisdom, balance, and self-mastery.

For us, it has been the best small, portable read we've encountered. Wonderful, even, to read multiple times and continue learning from one of humanity's most brilliant minds.

Synopsis

Seneca describes anger as a form of madness that clouds judgment, harms both the one who feels it and those around them, and leads to violence, cruelty, and injustice. He offers a series of strategies to prevent it, such as education, self-control, reflection, and the practice of patience. He also addresses how to deal with anger in others and how to act with moderation. With a clear style full of examples, On Anger is a timeless work that invites us to cultivate reason as a guide for behavior.

About the Author

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BCE – 65 CE), born in Cordoba, was one of the most important figures of the Roman Empire: philosopher, politician, and playwright. He is the foremost representative of Roman Stoicism, which advocates virtue and reason as the path to inner peace. Seneca's life adds extraordinary weight to his writings: he was Emperor Nero's tutor. The man who wrote about how to master anger lived every day alongside the embodiment of capricious power. Ultimately, Nero himself condemned him to death, and Seneca faced his end with the Stoic fortitude he always preached.
