Our Review

The Divine Comedy is that peak of the human spirit that we all know we must one day climb, but which we keep postponing because it inspires respect. However, we wanted to bring you this version by Abilio Echeverría, published by Alianza, because it is a marvel: it manages to maintain the poetic breath and musicality of Dante's original hendecasyllable without sacrificing clarity.

As Alberto Manguel rightly says on the book's cover band: it is probably the best translation we have in our language. It is a difficult read, but one that ultimately transforms the reader, an architecture of words where every circle and every star is measured with astonishing mathematical and theological precision.

More than a religious poem, it is a medieval synthesis of knowledge, politics, and human passion that continues to resonate with surprising modernity seven centuries later.

💡 DROJANIAN TIP: We recommend a leisurely read. Don't try to devour the cantos in a hurry; let Dante's words (and the footnotes, which in this edition are very good and not at all intrusive) guide you. It's a book to highlight and return to throughout your life. Don't be scared by the theological density; at the end of the day, it's the story of a man lost in a dark wood seeking his way back home and to love.

Synopsis

We accompany Dante Alighieri on a visionary journey through the three realms of the afterlife. Guided first by the poet Virgil (symbol of human reason), the protagonist descends into the abysses of Hell, where sins are punished with terrifying poetic irony. After ascending the mountain of Purgatory, where the soul is purified through hope, Dante is led by his beloved Beatrice to the celestial spheres of Paradise.

About the Author

Dante Alighieri (1265–1321): Florentine poet, philosopher, and political thinker, nicknamed "the Supreme Poet." His life was marked by exile and his platonic love for Beatrice Portinari. With The Divine Comedy, he not only laid the foundations of modern Italian but also created the most influential moral and cosmogonic map of Western culture.
