Where the Wild Things Are (ages 4+)

Where the Wild Things Are (ages 4+)

Our review

It's one of the few books that takes children seriously.

Maurice Sendak understood that childhood isn't just rosy; there's also anger, frustration, and a desire to "eat everything up." Max, the protagonist, is a real child who gets angry. His journey to the land of the wild things isn't just an adventure; it's the perfect way to explain how to manage a tantrum: the anger grows (the forest grows in the room), explodes (monster party!), and then calms down, giving way to the need to feel loved.

Visually it's hypnotic (notice how the illustrations grow in size as Max's fantasy grows). It's the perfect book to tell a child: "I love you even when you're a monster." And the ending... that ending with dinner "still warm" is the most comforting embrace in literature.

🏆 Won the Caldecott Medal (1964)

Synopsis

When Max puts on his wolf suit and starts making mischief all over the house, his mother calls him "WILD THING!" and sends him to bed without supper.

Alone in his room, Max doesn't give up. Suddenly, a forest begins to grow, an ocean appears, and Max sails through day and night until he arrives at... where the wild things live. There, their terrible inhabitants name him King of all wild things and the great rumpus begins. But being king is tiring, and Max begins to miss a place where someone loves him more than anyone.

About the author

Maurice Sendak (1928-2012) revolutionized children's literature. Far from the model, well-behaved children of the time, he drew rebellious, mischievous, and complex children. Where the Wild Things Are (1963) caused controversy at first for being "too dark," but ended up winning the Caldecott Medal and becoming an absolute classic. Sendak used to say: "Children know that there are scary things; what they need are stories to master them."
