Captain Alatriste (The Adventures of Captain Alatriste 1) (14+ years)

Captain Alatriste (The Adventures of Captain Alatriste 1) (14+ years)

Our review

This is a book that has it all: fun, intrigue, historical realism... One of the things we liked most about this series is that it's an easy read and helps you forget the tragedies and hardships of everyday life. It's ideal if you're looking for short books to enjoy, without sacrificing good writing. It reminds us a lot of old Western novels, but set in the Spanish Golden Age.

With this novel, you will travel to 17th-century Madrid. But not the Madrid of palace poets, rather that of dark taverns, frozen mud in the streets, and drawn steel on every corner. "Captain Alatriste" is not the story of a hero, but of a survivor: a mercenary swordsman who, out of loyalty to a dead comrade, takes charge of his young son, Íñigo Balboa, who will be our eyes in this twilight Spain.

If you are looking for a swashbuckling novel with impeccable historical accuracy, dialogues as sharp as a dagger, and an atmosphere you can almost smell, this is the gateway to one of the best adventure series written in Spanish.

Synopsis

The story, narrated by an adult Íñigo Balboa recalling his youth, begins when he arrives in Madrid to serve as page to Diego Alatriste, thus fulfilling the last wish of his father, who died in Flanders. Through Íñigo, we learn about the captain's daily life: a brave and laconic man who earns a living as a mercenary swordsman, accepting dangerous jobs amidst the intrigues of Philip IV's court.

About the Authors

Arturo Pérez-Reverte was born in Cartagena in 1951. He is one of Spain's most widely read and influential novelists and journalists and a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. His past as a war correspondent deeply influenced his style, characterized by realism and a lucid view of human nature. He is a master of historical fiction, with an unparalleled ability for research and atmosphere creation.

It is important to highlight that the original idea and research for this first book were a collaboration with his daughter, Carlota Pérez-Reverte. The series was born when they discovered that textbooks barely dedicated a paragraph to the Golden Age, and together they embarked on the project to bring that crucial era of Spanish history to life.
