The Invisible Guardian (Baztán Trilogy 1)

The Invisible Guardian (Baztán Trilogy 1)

Our review

The first installment of this saga was absolutely addictive. We couldn't stop turning the pages. Dolores Redondo's style is wonderful, for the way it immerses you in the plot and the magic of the Baztán Valley. Although we sometimes find thrillers difficult to read, we found this novel spectacular.

The Invisible Guardian is a hypnotic thriller that redefines the Spanish crime novel by masterfully fusing an absorbing police plot with the humid atmosphere, ancient mythology, and family secrets of the enigmatic valley.

The case is handled by Amaia Salazar, a brilliant inspector trained at the FBI, who is forced to return to her childhood village. For her, the investigation is not just about catching a murderer. It is, above all, a painful return to a tormenting family past and a confrontation with the beliefs of a place where forensic science clashes head-on with legends about the Basajaun.

We can't say more: if you like the detective genre, this book is the best gateway to the universe of Dolores Redondo.

Synopsis

On the banks of the Baztán River, in Navarre, the naked body of a teenager appears. The macabre staging —with a typical pastry, a txantxigorri, placed on her body— sets off all alarms and is soon linked to another murder that occurred a month earlier. Amaia Salazar, an inspector with the Foral Police, is sent from Pamplona to lead an investigation that forces her to return to Elizondo, the village where she was born and from which she has always tried to flee. There, she must confront not only an intelligent and methodical serial killer but also the ghosts of her own childhood and the local mythology that intertwines with the case.
