The monk

The monk

Our review

This is a novel that starts slow and builds up. At first, it doesn't feel like a horror book, but as the story progresses, it stirs you more and more internally, culminating in an epic ending. Although some events are predictable, it is so well-narrated that you want to keep reading and discovering.

If you like stories of ghosts, witchcraft, and secret passages, The Monk is a classic you shouldn't miss. It is set in Madrid, in a religious atmosphere that every horror movie lover enjoys. Matthew G. Lewis creates an unforgettable story, considered one of the best Gothic novels of Romanticism.

An ideal book to read on Halloween night.

Synopsis

Ambrosio is a well-known and respected monk throughout Madrid. Every Thursday, the church is packed to hear his sermon. He is an authoritarian and pure man, but... for how long? Witchcraft, pacts with the devil, punishments from the Inquisition, and ghosts are some of the things that appear in this Gothic horror novel.

About the Author

Matthew Gregory Lewis (London, 1775-1818) was the son of a landowner, which provided him with a good position to travel and learn about the work of great authors. At just 19 years old, he created his most successful work: "The Monk". It was a controversial work that Lewis was forced to soften in subsequent versions. He was a friend of great authors of the time, such as Lord Byron and Mary Shelley.
