The Picture of Dorian Gray (ages 14+)

The Picture of Dorian Gray (ages 14+)

Our Review

Why are we sometimes so afraid of the great classics? Perhaps it's because we fear disappointment, that we won't actually like it after hearing so much about it, or that we won't connect with the story. However, that hasn't happened to us with "The Picture of Dorian Gray." Quite the opposite: we wonder why we hadn't read it before.

It's a novel that hooks you from beginning to end. The suspenseful, dark, and at times suffocating atmosphere gives it the Victorian touch you wouldn't expect from a novel like this. And the reflections that make you think and share ideas with the protagonist himself add the finishing touch.

The question it poses is eternal: What if you could sell your soul to preserve your youth and beauty forever? What price would you be willing to pay? This is the question facing the young and dazzling Dorian Gray when, upon seeing his magnificent portrait, he desperately wishes never to age.

Through a Faustian pact in the heart of Victorian London, the brilliant Oscar Wilde weaves a gothic thriller, a social satire, and a profound philosophical reflection on beauty, moral decay, and the dangerous relationship between art and life.

Without a doubt, you must read it. It is one of every reader's essentials before they die.

Synopsis

The story begins when the talented painter Basil Hallward finishes his masterpiece: a portrait of Dorian Gray, a young man of extraordinary beauty. In the studio, he meets Lord Henry Wotton, a cynical and hedonistic aristocrat who fascinates Dorian with his theories about life, youth, and pleasure. Influenced by him, Dorian expresses aloud a fateful wish: that he may remain forever young and that the portrait be the one to age and bear the weight of his actions.

About the Author

Oscar Wilde was born in 1854 in Dublin, Ireland. He was a writer, poet, and playwright, and one of the most brilliant and controversial personalities of his time. He is the greatest exponent of Aestheticism, a movement that advocated "art for art's sake," and his wit and epigrams made him a celebrity in Victorian society. His life was as dramatic as his work, and his tragic end made him a martyr and a cultural icon.

The publication of "The Picture of Dorian Gray," his only novel, scandalized society at the time and was used as evidence against him during the infamous trials that led to his imprisonment for "gross indecency."
