The Sun Over Breda (The Adventures of Captain Alatriste 3) (Ages 14+)

The Sun Over Breda (The Adventures of Captain Alatriste 3) (Ages 14+)

Our Review

There are novels you read and there are novels you live. The Sun of Breda is, without a doubt, one of the latter. This book is a journey to the heart of a painting, a unique opportunity to get stained with the same mud as the soldiers of the Tercios immortalized by Velázquez. We have chosen it because it is a history lesson told with the pulse of a thriller. Pérez-Reverte makes you feel the cold, hunger, and camaraderie of a legendary siege. It is the perfect novel to understand the soul of an era and to look at a painting in a museum with new eyes.

"The Sun of Breda," published in 1998, is the third adventure of Captain Alatriste and one of the saga's most celebrated novels. Arturo Pérez-Reverte takes his characters from the intrigues of Madrid to immerse them in the mud, blood, and cold of Flanders, offering a masterful chronicle of life in the Spanish Tercios and the history hidden behind one of the world's most famous paintings: Velázquez's "The Surrender of Breda."

If you want to experience one of history's most famous sieges from within and understand the soul of the men who inspired Velázquez, this novel is a must-read.
